Technology-Facilitated Abuse

Technology-facilitated abuse is a serious and growing issue where abusers exploit technology to control, intimidate, or harm others. This form of abuse can encompass physical, sexual, psychological, or economic harm, often using digital tools to exert power.

For instance, an abuser might hack into a victim’s phone to monitor their calls, messages, or location, effectively invading their privacy. Cyberstalking is another common tactic, where the abuser relentlessly tracks the victim’s online activity, sends threatening messages, or spreads false information about them on social media.

In some cases, abusers misuse cameras or smart home devices to spy on victims, such as installing hidden cameras in private spaces or using home security systems to monitor their movements. Financial abuse can also occur, like accessing the victim’s online banking accounts to drain funds or restrict their financial independence.

Children can also be targeted, with abusers using technology to manipulate or control them, such as sending harmful messages or using social media to alienate them from the other parent. These examples highlight the pervasive and damaging nature of technology-facilitated abuse, making it crucial to recognize and address this behavior.
